Mount Norquay Wildlife Research Monitoring Project
The Juniper Hotel is located within the Cascade Wildlife Corridor
(CWC) in Banff National Park, Alberta. Canadian Rockies hotels located in such an
important place is both a privilege and a responsibility. We recognize
that a large part of this responsibility is to understand and protect
the wildlife in the areas that surround Canadian Rockies hotels and accommodations.
Last summer, the hotel partnered with UTSB Research (www.utsb.ca)
to conduct a wildlife monitoring project in the CWC. In July of
2005, 10 remote camera locations were set up on the lower slopes
of Mount Norquay behind The Juniper.
Two digital cameras, triggered by movement, were regularly rotated
through these 10 locations. The resulting collection of still photographs
is a record of animal and human movement behind our Canadian Rockies hotel. This
project, which will run each summer until 2007, will help us better
understand both wildlife and human activity within the CWC. Additionally,
the project results will help determine how human use from Canadian Rockies hotels
in the area affects wildlife movement. For instance, are animals
using the trails during the day?
The project results will contribute to ongoing work by The Canadian
Institute for Conservation Biology, Parks Canada Agency's
wildlife corridor research, and to a wildlife interpretive display
for public education purposes at The Juniper. |
Interpretive Programming at The Juniper
The story of the Bow Valley weaves together natural history, the
histories of First Nations peoples (who have inhabited this valley
for millennia), and the arrival stories of explorers, European settlers,
and eventually, tourists from around the world that stay in Banff,
Alberta, Canada accommodations.
The Juniper's collection of artwork, architectural design,
music, and The Juniper Bistro & Lounge menu items were all inspired by
themes drawn from the history, traditions, and wildlife of the Bow
Valley and the hotel site in particular. Additionally, The Juniper's
Heritage Hallway (located on the main floor) showcases a series
of interpretive panels, artifacts, and art pieces that tell the
story of the hotel site. Banff, Alberta, Canada accommodations like
The Juniper have a rich archeological history.
Presently, The Juniper is working toward bringing the complexities
of the history and traditions of this wonderful place alive with
interpretive theatre and an interpretive trail around the Banff,
Alberta, Canada accommodations property.
Interpretive Theatre:
Additionally, The Juniper is working in partnership with The Buffalo
Nations Museum to host contemporary Aboriginal artists in our Banff,
Alberta, Canada accommodations and to provide guests with the unique
opportunity to attend workshops on traditional Aboriginal arts such
as quill work, beading, drumming, and storytelling.
Interpretive Trails:
The Juniper has hired an anthropologist to work in conjunction with
a landscape architect to design an interpretive trail that will
meander around the hotel property on Mount Norquay. This trail will
weave together interpretation of natural features (such as local
plants and animals), landscape features (such as geology and human
features), and archaeological sites, to create a strong sense of
place for guests at the hotel.
Banff, Alberta, Canada accommodations like The Juniper are proud
of their heritage and archeological importance. |
