Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Stephen Hutchings trained as an art historian.
While Hutchings work moves between drawing, printmaking and painting,
he sees drawing as the central and pivotal creative act. Drawing is the
organizing and defining procedure for Hutchings work. For this reason
there is a graphic quality even to the paintings.
Hutchings paintings focus on a single image – an isolated bush set against
an indeterminate ground that seems to suggest the sky. The “bush” is a
metaphor that directly addresses the human condition. The dark silhouette
of the bush contrast with the light background often painted with the
artist's fingers.
